Lot Essay

The catalogue of the 1851 International Exhibition stated about this plaque: 'An example of CARVED WOOD, by Lienard, of Paris, shows it to be the work of an artist. It is sculpted in alto-relievo; the design has reference to field sports, the three compartments exhibiting respectively, foxes, deer and partridges; the sides of the centre frame, birds and hunting implements; while the base supports two or three dogs. Festoons of leaves encircling the frames enrich the composition and impart to it much elegance by their graceful arrangement'.
