Lot Essay

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Owen Evan-Thomas, Domestic Utensils of Wood, Stobart Davies, Hertford, republished 1992. A comparable tamper carved with a lurcher and hare is illustrated figure F., plate 44, page 111, and discussed as possibly Swiss and 18th century.

Evan-Thomas's attribution in suggesting the tamper is Swiss is unlikely, coursing was certainly practised in England in the 18th century.
