Lot Essay

The Hope (a brig-sloop) was sold in 1819; the last recorded Charlotte (a schooner) was wrecked in 1801.
The sampler must have been worked after 1814 when the HMS Nelson, named after the 'Immortal Hero', was built (it was broken up in 1867).
