Lot Essay

This fragment is taken from 'The Espousal', one of a set of eight pastoral tapestries following the shepherd and shepherdess, Gombaut and Maccée, from childhood to old age. In each scene image and text are combined with the inclusion of narrative inscriptions and dialogue, a device normally confined to the late Middle Ages. For an illustration of the full tapestry and a discussion of the 'Gombaut and Maccée' set, see Flemish Tapestry, Guy Delmarcel, page 201, plate 7.6
