In 1790 an Act of New Buildings in the City of Edinburgh resulted in Robert Adam laying the foundation stone, on St Andrew's Day 1791, of the Edinburgh Bridwell. Named after the House of Correction in Fleet Street, London, it was Adam's last realised design for a public building.
It has been suggest that the sitter is a benefactor or Governor of the prison.
