The location of the original pictures is unknown, although a copy of Napoleon III is in the Royal Collection and a copy of Empress Eugenie is in Chateau de Beloeil, France.
Winterhalter was commissioned to paint the original pictures in 1853 at a cost of 24,000 francs. The portraits were copied, engraved, transferred to Sévres porcelain, woven into tapestries, made into miniatures and interpreted into sculpture, and in doing so became univeral talismen for the Second Empire.
