Lot Essay

Maurice Levis, born in Paris in 1863, was a pupil of Harpignies. In 1888 he exhibited in the Salon de la Societé des Artistes des Champs Elysées. In 1895 he received an honourable mention, and soon after received a medal. In 1904-1910 he travelled in the East and Eastern Africa making studies, but on his return to France found more charm in the scenery of his own country. He had special exhibitions at the Galerie Georges Petit in the years 1910, 1920 and 1922.
