Brocky was a Hungarian painter active in England. This is evident in this particular work where an attribution was suggested to Sir Frederick Leighton. On study trips to Italy and Paris (1837) he copied old master paintings and again this training is apparent in this work.
He was to become a favourite portrait painter of the British aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeosie. Brocky painted mainly in an oval format and a great majority of his work, including this work, is unsigned.
