THE LEGENDARY 1978 MONTRACHET BY DRC

Montrachet 1978 from Domaine de la Romanée Conti is justifiably rated as one of the greatest White Burgundies ever made and certainly one of the most sought-after. Opportunities to acquire this wine, let alone taste it, are once in a life-time!

Only a few lots of this wine have been offered at auction around the world in most recent memory and never in a full-case. It is not an exaggeration to state that this wine is "ultra-rare". If one considers that only 2735 bottles were made over 25 years ago - it is incredible to find a pristine example of an original wooden case that has been in the same ownership for all of its life.

In the field of fine and rare wines, this example is in the premier league, matching provenance, rarity and a truly great wine.

With an average production of 250 cases per year, this is the smallest release of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Their parcel is located on the Chassagne part of the vineyard, making it a more flamboyant wine, rather than the mineral chararcteristics of the wines from the Puligny side of the vineyard.

The 1978 crop was smaller than average due to the cold and wet spring weather during flowering. The vintage was saved by warm weather in August and September. The Domaine who are traditionally the last to pick their chardonnay grapes in Montrachet, hoping for high levels of maturity (this is one of the reasons why the 1992 vintage was never released, the wine was overipe and not acceptable to the Domaine). It is no secret that the 1978 whites needed time in bottle due to their acidity levels and structure, to fully evolve and show their greatness. The 1978 is now drinking marvelusly well.
