Lot Essay

To the right of the large panel of Vishnu is the tenth avatar, Kalki, brandishing a sword on horseback, who is believed to appear at the end of the present age to overcome the forces of evil, followed in descending order until Kurma, the tortoise avatar; cf. M. Lerner, The Flame and Lotus, 1984, p. 84f., for another more elaborately carved example.
