8 volumes, 8° (217 x 132mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, 20 maps and plans, some folding. (Short clean tear to map 2, occasional light spotting.) Finely-bound in contemporary tree calf, covers with central gilt armorial, spines gilt in compartments with red and green morocco lettering-pieces (rebacked, lightly rubbed).
Historian and politician, George Grote was MP for the City of London from 1832 to 1841. After retiring from parliament he devoted himself to literature. The above work is his best known. He also wrote Plato and the other companions of Socrates (1865) and Fragments on Ethical Subjects (1876). Blackmer Sale Catalogue, lot 1284; Brunet II, 1764: "Ouvrage capital dans lequel l' auteur a montré autant de saine critique que d' éruidition. Le dernier volume se termine à la mort d' Alexandre."
