FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. These two works contain some of the most explicit statements of Celtis' cultural nationalism and his proposal for studia humanistica. He calls for the reform and strengthening of German universities so that they may compete with their Italian counterparts. He also calls on German youth to defend against the age-old cliché of teutonic barbarism by embracing humanism not only to match but to surpass the cultural achievements of the rest of Europe. The Panegyricus also appeared as a broadside, probably before Ratdolt's edition in book form. With MS correction on 1/1v, line 5, as often, presumably made in Ratdolt's shop. Cf. Amor als Topograph, exhibition catalogue, Bibliothek Otto Schäfer, 2002, no. 30. HCR 4841; GW 6466; BMC II, 386 (IA. 6733); Goff C-372.
