(Fos. d1 and u8 largely torn out, light dampstaining, spotting and browning, minor worming.) Italian 17th-century flexible paste-boards without backstrip sewn on 3 split tawed thongs, remains of spine-label (wormed and stained, layers of the board separating). Provenance: Vienna, Barnabite College of St. Michael (17th-century inscription).
Fifth illustrated edition of the Divine Comedy. The woodcuts are attributed to the Master of the Pico Pliny, a prolific miniaturist whose illuminations appear in a large number of manuscripts and incunables dating from 1464 to 1494. The Pico Master applied his art to both the original decoration of books and to the production of designs which allowed their mechanical reproduction in the form of woodcuts. This edition contains the second appearance of these illustrations, the blocks having been employed by the same printer once before (Sander 2313).
