GUILLERMUS Parisiensis (attributed to) -- [Johannes HEROLT (d.1468)]. Postilla super epistolas et evangelia. [Basel: Nicolaus Kesler, c.1502].
Chancery 4° (211 x 155mm). Collation: A-L8 M4; Aa-GG8 Hh6. 153 (of 154, without final blank) leaves. 49 lines of commentary and headline. Type: 1:180(160)G, 2:82a, 6:64G. Woodcut initial on title, full-page woodcut of the symbols of the Evangelists on title, large Crucifixion cut on part II title, 52 other woodcuts. Naive hunting scene drawn on rear pastedown. (Occasional marginal tears, a few small wormholes at beginning and end.) Contemporary blindtooled calf over wooden boards, sides panelled, foliate rolls, single brass fore-edge clasps (worn with some loss of leather). Provenance: Paul Burger of ?Strassburg (contemporary inscription dated 'anno sexto', annotations) -- ?Moburanus monastery (title inscription erased).
The Postilla is traditionally attributed to Guillermus, Dominican friar of Paris, based on the preface signed by him contained in most early printed editions. The text is now given to Johannes Herolt (cf. Verfasser Lexikon2, III, 1123ff.). The title woodcuts are close copies of those used by Furter in a 1495 edition of this work, while the remaining 52 woodcuts are copies of Kesler's own 1492 edition.
