MAXIMILIAN I (1459-1519) -- Militum coronatorum creatio et privilegia eorundem. [Antwerp: Theodoricus Martens, after 28 October 1494].
Chancery 4° (202 x 135mm). Collation: a8 (a1r title, a1v blank, a2r text, a8 blank). 7 (of 8, without final blank) leaves. 42 lines. Type: 2:72G, 3:145G. (Title a little soiled and mounted, repairing tears, slight marginal spotting.) 19th-century German tan quarter morocco boards, paper spine label.
FIRST EDITION of a work describing the ceremony held on 28 October 1494 at Antwerp in which Emperor Maximilian I took up the insignia of the Confraternity of St. George. Maximilian I founded the secular Confraternity (approbation issued by Pope Alexander VI on 13 April 1494) to succeed the defunct Austrian Order of St. George, which had been founded by Friedrich III in 1468; both Order and Confraternity had as their aim a crusade against the Turks. The present edition prints the Latin text of the ceremony conferring on Maximilian the Confraternity's insignia. Two editions in German appeared shortly afterwards. The address describes the history and purpose of the Order and Confraternity, and is followed by the benedictions and prayers which were said following the Mass. Maximilian's crusade against the Turks was not realised as he became distracted by events in France. RARE: no copy in America; not in BMC or BSB. Cf. 'Die Druckwerke des Österreichisches St. Georgsordens (1494-1502)', Gutenberg-Jahrbuch, 1962, pp. 183-88. C 3936; Polain(B) 2646; IDL 3170.
