This 17th-century imperial family retreat is located in the foothills of Mount Hiei in northeastern Kyoto. It was planned as a series of three garden areas stepped down the hillside and separated and surrounded by ricefields. The buildings on the right of this screen are in the lower garden. They are identified as the Jugetsukan (or perhaps the Sugetsukan), the Zorukuan, and a tea house (Ochayaban). The Shugakuji temple is shown at the top of the third panel from the right and just to the left is another tea house or ochayaban. The famous Rin'untei, a small belvedere in the upper garden, is shown at the top of the third panel from the right together with the Senshidai, a cantilievered porch. The large mountain in the distance at the left is Mount Hiei, which serves as "borrowed scenery" for this garden. Yokawa on Mount Hiei appears at the top of the far left panel. Below Mount Hiei is a second small belvedere located in the upper garden, the Kyusuiken. When Emperor Go-Mizunoo built this garden he had a small stream diverted to fill a large pond in the upper garden for boating, as seen here.
