A RARE SMALL PAINTED BRONZE TRIPOD VESSEL AND COVER, DING
Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220)
The compressed body raised on three slender legs and encircled by a median flange with two fish painted above and a lozenge band below, with a pair of pierced, upright rectangular handles, the domed cover painted with a dragon, its long slender body undulating around three small applied birds that form the feet of the cover when inverted, all in red, white, black and pale green; containing original contents, now dry and of malachite color

The group of vessels in the Royal Ontario Museum includes a ding and cover similar to the present lot. Like the covered hu in the Royal Ontario Museum, the present ding also contains the remains of a substance, probably grain, that was placed in it at the time of burial.
