Lot Essay

Compare the silver pillow of this type and size incised with an inscription with a date corresponding to 985, decorated on the top with a pair of confronted phoenixes, and on the long sides with monster masks, illustrated in Chinesisches Gold und Silber; Die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, Zurich, 1994, no. 242. Unlike the present example the grounds of the decorative panels appear to be plain.
