The concave oval face with central brass cross with circular domed brass eyes, triangular nose and central raised ridge to forehead, the four quadrants with horizontal copper strips, the brass-covered crescent crest and side panels with stippled ornament, the cylindrical neck bound with copper with incised lozenge ornament

Lot Essay

Cf. Chaffin, A. and E., L'Art Kota, les figures de reliquaire, Meudon, 1980, p.123, fig.41, for a very similar figure in the British Museum and p.127, fig.43, for another in the collection of Max Itzikovitz.
According to the authors' classification this Kota falls into group 6, a group of medium-sized figures considered by the authors to be one of the oldest and most beautiful groups.
