JAMES ROBERT RICHARDSON Regarded as a skilled and hard worker, Richardson was born in Ashington on 8th February 1911. He began his career with East Northumberland Schools and then Blyth Spartans before joining Newcastle United in 1928 for the first of his two spells with the North East club. Richardson was involved in the controversial "was the ball over the line?" 1932 F.A.Cup final decision when he chased a ball to the byline and crossed for his United team mate Jack Allen to equalise against Arsenal. Thinking that the ball had crossed the line the Arsenal defenders made no attempt to tackle Allen and were stunned when the referee gave the goal. His International debut was also a first for his Country as they took on Italy in Rome in 1933. Huddersfield Town signed him in 1934 and he played three seasons with them before returning to Newcastle United in 1937. He had further spells with Millwall and Leyton Orient as player/coach.
