Lot Essay
A nearly identical stool stamped Gillows Lancaster was sold in these Rooms from the Estate of Mary, Vicountess Rothermere, 16 April 1994, lot 151. A manuscript design for this form, described as "A Mahogany Grecian Dressing Stool" is included in the Gillow Estimate Sketchbook of 1827, p. 3568. Gillows supplied nearly identical stools to Tatton Park, Cheshire in 1812 (illustrated in N. Goodison and J. Hardy, Gillow at Tatton Park, F.H.S.J., 1970, pl. 22). Other examples have also been sold, including one sold from the Arlingworth Collection, Sotheby's New York, 12 December 1996, lot 266 and a pair, anonymous sale, Christie's London, 19 April 1990, lot 35.
