The curved crestrail over a baluster-form backsplat above a shaped drop-in seat covered in floral needlework upholstery between outswept shepherd's crook arms on a conforming seatrail on foliate and shell-capped cabriole legs on claw feet

Lot Essay

This chair once belonged in the collection formed by Martha Baird Rockefeller. On August 15, 1951, John Davison Rockefeller, Jr. (JDR Jr.) married Mrs. Martha Baird Allen, a former concert pianist and the widow of Arthur M. Allen, a classmate at Brown University. JDR Jr. was a generous philanthropist and the son of John D. Rockefeller, founder of the Standard Oil Company. Martha Baird Rockefeller became a respected philanthropist in her own right, and created the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music in 1957.
