Lot Essay

The present drawing is a study for one of the central figures in the unfinished picture 'Souls of the Styx'. The drawing is dateable to the early 1870s. The subject was inspired by Virgil's Aeneid, on which Morris and Burne-Jones were working together in the early 1870s.
