Lot Essay
Paul Travis graduated from the Cleveland School of Art in 1917 and was a well known local artist and faculty member of the Cleveland Institute of Art. In the late 1920's and 1930's there was an intense local interst in African Art and as a result Paul Travis travelled to Africa to study, collect and purchase Tribal Art for the Cleveland Musuem of Art. Travis taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art and his African trip received much newspaper publicity and frequent fund raisers were held to bring his collection back to Cleveland.
Russell B. Aitken knew Paul Travis when he was a student at the Cleveland School of Art, today known as the The Cleveland Institute of Art and studied drawing with him.
The 1931 May show of The Cleveland Musuem of Art was a well attended show featuring the works of Paul Bough Travis. His Elephants in Belgian Congo was purchased by Mrs B.P. Bole for $800 and the 1931 May show totalled $10,819.90.
