Lot Essay

Guerrier Tartare first appeared in Barye's catalogues circa 1845. The fondeur Ferdinand Barbedienne purchased the bronze and plaster modeles in the Barye atelier sale in 1876, and began to make posthumous casts from then onwards (The original bronze modele will be for sale at Christie's New York on 25 April 2003).

The present offering is a fine example of an epreuve ancienne, or lifetime cast. The presence of the Marchand sale label is an indication of the piece's important provenance. Dr. Marchand was well known as a major buyer at many of the Barye collection sales in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Another example of this model sold in these rooms, 24 April 2002, Lot 392 ($32,900)
