Provenance
Sir Philip Sassoon Bt, 25 Park Lane, London W1 (recorded in the Small Drawing Room in the 1939 inventory).

Around 1900 Sir Edward Sassoon 2nd Bt. (d.1912) and his wife Aline (nee de Rothschild) (d.1909) decorated and furnished their London house at 25 Park Lane in the French 18th century manner. It was further embellished from 1919 by their son Sir Philip Sassoon, 3rd Bt. (d.1939), who was assisted by the decorator Philip Tilden. Amongst the art exhibitions held at this house from the late 1920s, was that entitled 'Three French Reigns', 1933 (see J.Knox,'Sir Philip Sassoon, Bt. Aesthete, Connoisseur, Patron' introduction to Christie's King Street sale 'Works of Art from Collections of The Cholmondeley Family and the late Sir Philip Sassoon, Bt., from Houghton', 8 December 1994).

This pair of sofas is likely to have been made in the Parisian workshops of the tapissier-decorateur Jean-Henri Jansen, who employed an impressive array of cabinet-makers, upholsterers, bronziers and gilders at his workshops in the rue Pergolese and display rooms on the rue Royale. The furniture they produced was of exemplary quality, following 18th century French models. One of the most famous designers who worked at Jansen was Stephane Boudin, an outstanding traditional decorator of his day, who worked at Leeds Castle, Kent for Lady Baillie and Ditchley Park, Oxfordshire for the Trees (J. Cornforth, The Inspiration of the Past, London, 1985, pp 63, 77 & 125). Boudin also did some work for Sir Philip Sassoon at 25 Park Lane and he almost certainly designed these sofas for the window bays in the Small Drawing Room.
