DICKENS, Charles. Autograph letter signed ("Charles Dickens," with large flourish) to Dr. George Shrenburgh, Devonshire Terrace, London, 9 January 1844. 1 page, 8vo, minor repair in upper margin, tipped to a protective sheet.
DICKENS AND GERMAN TRANSLATIONS OF HIS NOVELS
An polite letter discussing the German translations of Dickens' works. Writing only a one month after he published the very successful A Christmas Carol, Dickens responds to a correspondent who has offered to prepare German translations for him: "I am exceedingly sorry to say, in reply to your note, that it is quite out of my power to give you the employment you seek...my publishers facilitate the German translations of my writings, by sending...sheets to certain German Booksellers. But this is [a] matter of arrangement between them. The books are translated in Germany; and the enterprise is not mine or my publishers, but originates with German houses of business."
