DOUGLAS'S MANUSCRIPT OF HIS ALPINE TRAVEL NARRATIVE 'TOGETHER,' with Douglas's heavily annotated text for the majority of the book's chapters. Together recounts Douglas's extended journeys in the Swiss Alps and the Tyrol, over a two-year period. Of the book's fourteen chapters, only parts of chapters 9 and 10 are present, and chapter 11 is wholly lacking. A comparison to the printed text reveals the density of Douglas's process of revision, with numerous sections expanded and changed in sometimes subtle and sometimes critical ways. The ending, for instance, is heavily revised and reworked in the published version and many of the chapters were further developed by Douglas in later stages, perhaps in proof. "Mr. R," a French youth named Rene to whom Douglas gave the manuscript, in an important feature of the narrative; he evidently served as Douglas's valet/guide, and is frequently gently mocked: "I have endeavoured to instil a little knowledge of English into the head of Mr. R. who, for all his faults, is a companionable young fellow with certain brigand-strains in his ancestry that go well with those in mine..." (p.14).
