Lot Essay

This form of two-branch candelabra combined with ink-stand, would originally have been fitted with a banner to shade the face from the heat and brightness of the candle-light. Two similar Italian examples, although without ink-stand base, are illustrated in J. Bourne & V. Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, London, 1991, pp. 94-95, figs. 304-305.
