Lot Essay

The heavily canted rectangular top and parquetry inlay relate to a pier table supplied by Mayhew and Ince to the 3rd Earl of Kerry in about 1770 and now in the Lady Lever Art Gallery (C. Cator, 'The Earl of Kerry and Mayhew and Ince: The Idlest Ostentation, Furniture History, 1990, p. 32, fig. 2).
A related serving-table, but with a blind fret-panelled frieze, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 8 June 1995, lot 211.
