Lot Essay

This George III table type, with dressing fittings concealed beneath a 'turn over' top, relates to the 'Shaving Table' illustrated in Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd ed. 1762 (pl. LIV); and a 'Dressing Stand' in Thomas Shearer's The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788, (fig. 1). Its inlay, of 'Roman' medallions and sunflowered libation-paterae festooned with 'poetic' laurels, also featured on a table, attributed to Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) and reputed to have been commissioned by George, Prince of Wales, later George IV (sold from The Bute Collection, in these Rooms, 3 July 1996, lot 20 (£13,800 despite the warped top)). A companion table, from the collection of Colonel H. H. Mulliner was also sold in these Rooms, 10 July 1924, lot 60.
