Lot Essay

The Egyptian reed 'sun-disc' mirror is embellished with Delphic-serpent branches and a lyric trophy evoking the sun and poetry-deity, Apollo. In 1804 George Smith issued patterns for related 'lights' or 'sconces', and described them as elegant and useful ornaments, 'reflecting objects in beautiful perspective' (G. Smith, Designs for Household Furniture, 1808, pls. 135 and 136). A leading manufacturer of such mirrors was Thomas Fentham (d. 1820) of the Strand, 'Manufacturer of Looking-Glasses, Convex and Concave Mirrors...' (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, figs. 332-348).
