Maliavin would seem to have been the only Russian artist of international significance to have drawn Trotsky from life. Certainly neither the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg nor the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow hold a single portrait of him in their collections, and indeed possession of such a portrait would have been extremely dangerous in Russia until Stalin's death in 1953.
The present drawing was probably drawn during the closed session of the Supreme Soviet from which photographers were barred; Trotsky (born in 1879) was a close associate of Lenin after joining the Bolsheviks. He was appointed first Soviet Defence Commissar forming the Red Army during the Civil War until 1925. After Lenin's death Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party, exiled and murdered in Mexico in 1940.
