Lot Essay

A version of the composition, measuring 63 x 89 cm., is in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne (inv. no. 1058), with some differences in colour: for example in the under-dress of the standing lady. The superior quality of the present work strongly suggests that it is the prime version, rather than that in Cologne, which has in the past erroneously been attributed to Codde. The costumes suggest a date of circa 1635-40.
