A .48 WHEEL-LOCK CARBINE
Partly early 17th Century
In the manner of a carbine of the Guard of Wolf Dietrich von Reitenau, Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg (reg. 1587-1612), with sighted two-stage smooth-bore barrel chiselled in relief throughout its length on a gilt ground with scrollwork and foliage involving masks and Classical figures, partly picked out with gold dots, chiselled and gilt tang, flat lock with safety-catch, manually operated pan-cover, and annular wheel-bracket, the plate chiselled in relief against a gilt ground with a scene of the chase, birds and foliated tendrils, picked out with gold dots, the jaws of the cock chiselled as a monster-head, full stock profusely inlaid with white staghorn lines enclosing staghorn tendrils and plaques engraved with ball-flowers, acorns, and foliage, some panels stained green, and some red, enriched with mother-of-pearl inlays engraved with further ball-flowers, engraved white staghorn butt-plate, chiselled and gilt trigger-guard, and wooden ramrod with staghorn tip (cock-bracket defective, chain link missing inside lock, fore-end cap incomplete, trigger reversed)
