Circa 1870
White metal skull with crest of Italian form, the whole extensively decorated with brass (possibly showing traces of gilding) mounts, the crest with lion's head at front, the rayed helmet-plate mounted with crowned shield of Spain with Cross of Savoy to inner escutcheon, and lion supporters, all in white metal, black hair mane and heavy brass chinscales with bosses (helmet-lining, cypher and chinscales defective)

Lot Essay

Duke Amadeus of Savoy (1845-90) was a younger son of Victor Emmanuel II, King of Italy, and after his marriage was elected King of Spain in November 1870, but abdicated after little more than two years. The helmet, but for the armorial devices and cypher etc., closely resembles that of Italian Cuirassiers
