AN OFFICER'S SHOULDERBELT-PLATE OF THE ROYAL LANCASTER MILITIA, MOUNTED IN A PRESENTATION CASE
1904, the shoulder-belt plate 1853
A rectangular plate of burnished silver, the reverse hallmarked Birmingham 1853, mounted with a 'hobnail' star bearing a crowned gilt circlet with green enameled wreath around a rose in red enamel (enamel chipped), in a small leather case lined with purple velvet, the hinged lid of the case bearing (on the inside) a shield-shaped silver-plated plaque with inscription: PRESENTED BY J.R.E. GOULDSBURY, BARRISTER-AT-LAW, LAHORE, TO COLONEL HOGGE AND OFFICERS, 23RD PIONEERS IN MEMORY OF MANY HAPPY HOURS AND IN RECOGNITION OF THE HONOR THEY HAVE DONE HIM BY PLACING HIS PORTRAIT IN THEIR MESS. THIS PLATE WAS WORN BY THE DONOR WHEN IN 1ST ROYAL LANCASTER MILITIA (DUKE'S OWN) - ENSIGN AUGUST '54; LIEUTENANT MARCH '55/56 - LAHORE JAN.1904
