With this item is the invoice showing its acquisition in 1969 from A La Vieille Russie, Inc., New York. C d'O Pilkington Jackson was particularly famous for the series of eighty-three carved and painted wood figures relating to Scottish military history which he was commissioned to carve for the Scottish United Services Museum in Edinburgh in the 1930s. He carved other figures in the same general style and later produced some limited edition cast versions of his figures. The regimental museum of the Black Watch has a figure of this limited edition on display.
As the senior Highland regiment of the British Army, the Black Watch were the first unit to wear the kilt, and their title derives from the sombre colour of the "Government" tartan of which the kilts were (and still are) made. The regiment fought in North America, against the French in the Seven Years War, and again during the War of Independence
