With finely etched, notched-back blade, the rich decoration including thistle-sprays, crown and VR cypher, regimental title 93rd SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS, scroll with the honor CAPE OF GOOD HOPE and retailers' details, proof-mark to blade, silver-mounted grip, small knife and fork (replacements, for which the scabbard has been adapted) of broadly similar style, silver-mounted scabbard with the number 93 and gilt thistle on top mount and thistle ornaments (some defective) to the others

Lot Essay

This dirk belonged to Edward Court Haynes, who joined the 93rd Highlanders in May 1855 (barely six months after the regiment's famous stand against an overwhelming Russian force at the battle of Balaclava- celebrated as 'the Thin Red Line') and served with them until October 1871 (promoted Lieutenant 1855 and Captain 1867). His sword is offered as Lot 695 below
