A BAVARIAN OFFICIAL'S COURT STYLE SWORD (DEGEN)
Bormann, Munchen, mid-19th Century
With narrow single-edged blade blued for about half its length, with gilt crowned cypher L and trophy and scroll above and below etched (not coloured) panels within the blueing, fine gilt hilt with flat mother-of-pearl grips, the outer scale mounted with an elliptical gilt sunburst with raised crown and cypher L, curved lion's head pommel, ornate knucklebow and single shell of amazon shield form with raised recumbent lion on matt ground, black leather scabbard with gilt mounts, the locket stamped with maker's name

Provenance
This sword is stated to have come to the present owner from John A. Roosevelt, to whom it had been given by Herr Heinzen von Horrak after a wild-boar shoot in 1963. According to family tradition it was presented to the latter's grandfather by the King of Bavaria
