First half 19th Century
With curved counterfeit Persian single-edged blade, damascened with gold at the forte on each side and double-edged at the point, gilt-brass stirrup-hilt cast and chased in relief with neo-classical decoration, lion's head pommel and white shagreen grip, in its original massive embossed gilt-brass scabbard with two suspension-rings bearing embossed decoration

Lot Essay

By family tradition this weapon is believed to be from the armoury of Maréchal Soult (see note to Lot 638 above). It was displayed in the 'Napoleon in Rhode Island' exhibition at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, Providence RI, February-March 1978
