Lot Essay

The M,B and S stamps described above are those respectively of JBMLA de Mecquenem (Director, July 1855-August 1859), FA Bisch (Controller 2nd Class February 1844-January 1861, thereafter Controller 1st Class until March 1864) and FA Schülz (Controller 2nd Class February 1854-June 1872).
The Imperial Arms lightly rivetted transversely to the axis of the blade is a feature of all authentic sabres made at the Chatellerault works. They are all dated the same year and bear the same stamps on the blade. Among these authentic examples, one comes directly from the former collection of Baron Verly, sometime Commandant of the Cent-Gardes.
