AN OFFICER'S HELMET AND CUIRASS OF THE CENT-GARDES, 1855 MODEL
Both 1855-71
The helmet with silver-plated skull (with minor old modifications), gilt edging and ornate mounts, crest with a Medusa head on the front, bearing a soldier's white horsehair mane mounted on a leather backing stamped 1, white tuft in ornate gilt socket, the helmet-plate gilt with cypher N beneath crown flanked by laurel-sprays, elaborate laurel-pattern chinscales, ornate gilt plume-socket at side (no plume); together with a fine highly polished steel cuirass with formed border with gilt-brass studs (two missing from back-plate) the scaled linking-straps of steel with red leather backing, gold braid edging and ornate gilt keyplate end-tags and with gilt lion's-mask bosses at the fixed ends, much of the gold lace waist-strap remaining (but lacking its buckle and most of its red leather backing), now assembled on a stand (2)
