A library reflects the mind of its creator in rich and fascinating ways, and Russell B. Aitken's diverse interests are clearly captured in his vast collection of books. Most notable, to be sure, is the collection of sporting books. Many of the most significant works on big-game hunting of the 19th and 20th centuries are here, with special concentrations of African, Indian and North American material. The outstanding highlight is the Karamojo Bell archive which includes nearly all of Bell's original watercolors and drawings. The library is also a marvellous companion to the other categories present in the Aitken Collection, as several of the artists included in the fine arts section illustrate many of the books herein, and many of the books contain images of Mr. Aitken's exploits, both as a hunter and as a collector. Mr. Aitken's interest in sport extended to his many other collecting interests, including natural history, travel and exploration, arms and armour, literature and art, bindings and sets. It is, in every sense of the term, a gentleman's library.
