Engraved document signed in Russian, a military commission, St. Petersburg, 31 March 1772. 1 p., 15¼ x 18 in., elaborate engraved border with two-headed falcon at top, military and navigational paraphernalia, and classical figures, seal lacking, bound with a contemporary French translation, and ephemera. -- CATHERINE THE GREAT. Fine impression in red wax of Catherine the Great's Royal Seal, 6 5/8 in. diameter, depicting a two headed falcon grasping a scepter and cross adorned sphere in its claws, a knight on horseback on its breast, with a large crown sit at top, all encircled by coats of arms and cyrillic text, very fine condition, in original decorative brass container.
