A Japanese lacquer backgammon board
early 17th Century
the black lacquer ground frame decorated in gold hiramaki-e with
geese, one descending and the other on the ground, the interior with the traditional board in black and red lacquer and aogai inlay, the border decorated in gold hiramaki-e and inlaid in aogai with continuous hanabishi patterns, two small compartments, possibly for dice, with sliding covers at the centre of the border, copper gilt engraved kanagu, -- 33 7/8in. (86cm.) wide when open, 17¼ x 3 5/8 x 16¾in. (44 x 9.2 x 42.7cm.) when closed, (old damages especially to the interior).
