Lot Essay

This is a copy of a lost original by the artist, known through an engraving by Klauber after a drawing of Michailoff dated 1812. The engraving is inscribed 'Saint Petersbourg' and 'L'Annonciation du cabinet de Mr. Duval sur bois h 27 pos lge 28 pos.' Duval was a Swiss resident of St. Petersburg who also owned a study (Geneva, Musée d'Art et d'Histoire) for the Visitation by de Champaigne in the Collégiale, Villeneuve-lez-Avignon. Since Duval's posthumous sale in 1846, the location of the original has been unknown.
