HARRY CALLAHAN (1912-1999)
In 1956 Harry Callahan became the first photographer to receive the Graham Foundation award for advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, a $10,000 stipend which he used to live abroad the following year. In 1957 Frederick Sommer replaced Callahan for the year as Lecturer in Photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. It is believed that the following three photographs (lots 88-90) were acquired directly from Callahan between the years of 1956-1958. This same friend and student also acquired works from Frederick Sommer during his tenure at the Institute of Design in Chicago in 1957. Typical of vintage prints, these works appear to have been trimmed by Callahan in order to fit in a small storage box.
