Lot Essay

Modelled in 1835, in Barye's catalogues Lion tenant un guib is offered as the pendant to Tigre dévorant un gavial, seconde version (see lot 142), conceived the following year. The model was relatively successful during Barye's lifetime and, after his death, continued to be edited by Barbedienne until the 1920s.
