Lot Essay

Modelled in 1838, Deux cavaliers arabes tuant un lion is derived from Chasse au lion, one of Barye's large hunting groups for the Orléans surtout de table. The first bronze edition dates from around 1845, and the stamped signature and numbering on the present cast date it to before 1860. A cast stamped and numbered 1 was sold in these rooms, 15 February 1995, lot 175 ($27,600).
